Tourmaline the Celestial Architect - CWU Series 1, #1

$0.00

"Tourmaline the Celestial Architect - CWU Series 1, #1" 6x8 inches. Acrylic on cut paper layered on stretched canvas. 2018.

This piece is the first painting in a series I hope to create over the next few years.

Tourmaline is the universe as we humans know it, but personified as a great Celestial architect. She is a builder of worlds, and a force of infinite love. She transforms the pain and suffering of the universe into planets and stars (with the help of Yul, her giant turtle, not pictured in this piece).

When I think about this character a quote often comes to mind:

“Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.”

A little about the Cosmic Womb Series Project

As many of you have learned from my website or visiting one of my works in person, I am known for making rather large scale works. Be it sculpture, installations or painting, most of it could be considered too large for most people’s homes. Moreover, I have heard from many people that they wish they could afford my paintings but the cost is too high. This has led me on a journey to develop a format for smaller works that are still hand painted but more affordable than works previously available.

The format for this series is based on the 1992 Marvel Universe trading cards I collected as a child. These cards changed my life. I made lifelong friends, fell in love with a new artform and learned about the power of world building.

Each work is painted on watercolor paper with acrylic paint or gouache and affixed with gel medium onto a 6X8 stretched canvas. Create a distinction between this collection of small works and other small paintings I have chosen to mount these works on paper onto canvases that are 3/4th of an inch in depth. Periodically I will release new additions to the series, featuring other characters within the Cosmic Womb narrative.

When you purchase a piece from this series, the funds go towards replenishing supplies and art studio rental costs.

Once the 209 works have been completed, I plan to have the whole series printed as a collection of trading cards. Although this project will take some time, I believe finding more ways to make the work affordable and accessible to those who love it, is worth it. The more it is shared, the more it can grow.
