Plangenda, how I became friends with Time.
Growing up, I was often told by one of my elders that I was not friends with space and time. A little less than a decade ago I decided I would become friends with space and time by creating imaginary friends who embodied an empowering idea of both space and time. The first character was named Spacia, the other was Plangenda (sometimes called Plan-Genda or P-Gen). She can be seen in my paintings as a humanoid being with a grid like pattern all over her body, and manifests as a daily time blocking system I have developed over the years.
It began as a simple exercise in breaking time down in to a visual size. I folded a piece of paper and imagined each rectangle or square (depending on how you fold it) to be a block of time (sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes an hour).
I write the date, time and helpful morning and night time routine checkboxes at the beginning and end.
I write down the non-movable events, appointments and time dependent tasks (due dates) on to the sheet in pen.
Then I take colorful post-its and add the rest of my tasks.
This allows me to easily move a post-it if I end up not being able to complete a task during the desired time slot.
I can also move tasks to tomorrow’s Plangenda, or onto a calendar and set a different day for that task.
If I am moving a task daily to the next sheet, it helps me see which tasks I am avoiding.
If I am avoiding a task, I can examine it and see if it has multiple parts that need to be broken down into a series of tasks.
If you’d like to try Plangenda, I have added a link to a blank version of my time management system .
You can either click the black button on the left or click here to access my Dropbox Plangenda Link.
I print mine double sided, and often use the Genius Scan app to take a photo of each side so if I lose my Plangenda, I can reprint a copy out, or reference it from my phone :)
You may need to white out the times and dates and blocks of time that make sense for you schedule.
Please note that the later time blocks are longer than 30 minutes.
You can click the link to the left, to access a copy of it from my Dropbox account.

JooYoung Choi: Songs of Resilience From the Tapestry of Faith
Exhibition open from Sat Feb 12 2022 to Sun Sep 04 2022
The Crow Museum of Asian Art of The University of Texas at Dallas is pleased to present a focused multi-year exhibition series dedicated to making visible the work of Texas-based contemporary Asian women artists. The artists presented in this program focus on contemporary issues both in Texas and abroad, giving voice to complex, humanized stories of identity, place, tradition and modernity.
Through painting, video, sculpture, animation, music and installation art, multidisciplinary world builder JooYoung Choi documents the interconnecting narratives of a highly-structured, expansive, fictional land she has created and titled the Cosmic Womb. In her work, she explores issues of identity, belonging, trauma and resilience through the sci-fi/fantasy genre, inspired by the media of her childhood and her ongoing research on identity and the media representation of girls, women, intersex, transgender and non-binary people of color.
This exhibition introduces the Cosmic Womb multiverse and highlights some of its key characters and narratives. In creating a world that explores loss, healing and growth based upon a connective web of belief and faith in oneself, Choi expresses human resiliency and the strength that can be found through the power of storytelling.
Website Adjustments - Event Page Will Be Removed
Dear Friends,
I’ve decided to consolidate my “NEWS” and “EVENTS” Pages together.
Unfortunately, Square Space does not allow for an easy way to transfer these posts into the news section, so I will be pasting past events into a series of posts to ensure that the history of events remains documented. Wishing you all the best.

Introducing Luck Bugs
Now available at jooyoungchoi.com 🐞 !
Meet the Luck Bugs...
Luck Bugs are made of gratitude and thoughtful reflection. Luck Bugs don’t actually change outside forces to bring about luckiness, rather, they help emit a warm and loving energy that encourages people to think about the luck already in their lives. Just hold a luck bug in your hands, and think of the people you are lucky to know, love or spend time with. Luck bugs help us to find gratitude for the experiences that have or continue to bring us joy. They also remind us to embrace the qualities inside of each person that make them lucky.
Who is Betty Fantastic? She is a luck bug who loves gardening, dressing up for dance parties, bird watching and listening to vaporwave. She spends her days being an observant friend and has a masters in Luckology from CWU, that’s Cosmic Womb University. She is very much interested in visiting Earth, and finding a friendly room mate to live with.
Betty is a small Luck bug, she’s approximately 3 inches wide and 6 inches long. She is wearing three hand made flowers.
Who is Cousin Nev-Nov (pronunciation tip: rhymes with Bev-Dove) ? Little Nevvy is the cousin you are always happy to see when he’s in town. He’s a happy guy who loves the night life. He likes jazz clubs and comedy shows. He’s got a knack for winning trivia nights and coming in first place in luck bug dance competitions. He loves reading historical fiction romance novels, and watching documentaries about women who have changed the world. He is very social and is looking forward to finding a new home on Earth.
Nev-Nov is a a little bigger than a mini Luck bug, he’s approximately 3.25 inches wide and 5.25 inches long. He has 10 spots.
🐞 More about Luck Bugs 🐞
They’re also eco-friendly (they’re filled with between 60-100% remnant material from JooYoung’s large scale sculptures and puppets).
The sizes listed are approximate since each Luck Bug is one of a kind. Each bug is made in JooYoung Choi's studio. Funds from the Luck Bugs are used to keep JooYoung's studio well stocked with supplies and research materials, funding also helps to pay for the creation and repair of puppets, the development of video art, and the maintenance and storage of large scale sculptures. These artist objects are part of a limited edition of 1000 multiples, each Luck Bug is numbered.
