Growing up, I was often told by one of my elders that I was not friends with space and time. A little less than a decade ago I decided I would become friends with space and time by creating imaginary friends who embodied an empowering idea of both space and time. The first character was named Spacia, the other was Plangenda (sometimes called Plan-Genda or P-Gen). She can be seen in my paintings as a humanoid being with a grid like pattern all over her body, and manifests as a daily time blocking system I have developed over the years.
It began as a simple exercise in breaking time down in to a visual size. I folded a piece of paper and imagined each rectangle or square (depending on how you fold it) to be a block of time (sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes an hour).
I write the date, time and helpful morning and night time routine checkboxes at the beginning and end.
I write down the non-movable events, appointments and time dependent tasks (due dates) on to the sheet in pen.
Then I take colorful post-its and add the rest of my tasks.
This allows me to easily move a post-it if I end up not being able to complete a task during the desired time slot.
I can also move tasks to tomorrow’s Plangenda, or onto a calendar and set a different day for that task.
If I am moving a task daily to the next sheet, it helps me see which tasks I am avoiding.
If I am avoiding a task, I can examine it and see if it has multiple parts that need to be broken down into a series of tasks.
If you’d like to try Plangenda, I have added a link to a blank version of my time management system .
You can either click the black button on the left or click here to access my Dropbox Plangenda Link.
I print mine double sided, and often use the Genius Scan app to take a photo of each side so if I lose my Plangenda, I can reprint a copy out, or reference it from my phone :)
You may need to white out the times and dates and blocks of time that make sense for you schedule.
Please note that the later time blocks are longer than 30 minutes.
You can click the link to the left, to access a copy of it from my Dropbox account.
